Meditation Cushion Sets
A zafu is a round meditation cushion, while a zabuton is a larger, square cushion often placed underneath the zafu. Together, they provide a comfortable and supportive base for seated meditation. Read our guide on how to sit on a zafu and zabuton cushion.
The zafu and zabuton are both cushions used in meditation, but they serve different purposes. A zafu is a round or crescent-shaped cushion designed to elevate the hips, which helps align the spine and promotes a more comfortable seated posture for meditation. It's what you actually sit on.
A zabuton, on the other hand, is a larger, flat, rectangular mat that is placed underneath the zafu. Its purpose is to cushion the knees, ankles, and feet from the hard floor, providing extra comfort and support during longer meditation sessions. So, the zafu elevates your hips, while the zabuton cushions your lower limbs. They are often used together for a more complete and comfortable meditation setup.
