How long should smudging last?

There is no strict rule for how long smudging should last. It can be as brief or as extended as you feel necessary, with most sessions lasting anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes, depending on the scope and purpose. Trust your instincts and let the energy guide you through the process.

The length of time a smudging session should last depends on several factors, including the size of the space, the purpose of the smudging, and your personal preference. Here’s a general guide:

Smudging a Room or Small Space

If you are smudging a single room or a small space, such as an office or a bedroom, the process might take around 5 to 10 minutes. This includes the time to light the smudge stick, move around the room to ensure the smoke reaches all corners, and focus on any specific areas that may need extra cleansing.

Smudging an Entire House

For larger spaces, like an entire house, smudging can take anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the size of the home and the level of detail you wish to apply. You’ll want to move from room to room, taking the time to address doorways, windows, corners, and areas where energy tends to stagnate, such as closets or hallways.

Smudging a Person or Object

If you are smudging yourself, another person, or an object, such as a crystal or piece of furniture, the process can be much shorter. A personal smudging session might last around 3 to 5 minutes, while an object can often be smudged in just 1 to 2 minutes.

Purpose of the Smudging

The purpose behind your smudging can also influence how long it lasts. For example, a quick, daily cleanse might only take a few minutes, while a more in-depth ritual, such as preparing a space for a new beginning or after a significant event, might take longer.

Personal Comfort and Intuition

Ultimately, the duration of your smudging should be guided by your intuition and comfort level. Some people prefer to spend more time in the process, allowing themselves to meditate and connect deeply with the energy they are working with. Others may find that a quicker session is sufficient to achieve their desired outcome.
