What is the science behind Palo Santo?

The science behind Palo Santo includes its chemical composition, which provides anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, mood-enhancing, and insect-repellent properties. While the spiritual and energetic aspects of Palo Santo are more difficult to quantify scientifically, its traditional uses are supported by some scientific evidence.

The use of Palo Santo, while deeply rooted in spiritual and cultural traditions, also has some scientific underpinnings related to its chemical composition and effects:

Volatile Compounds

Palo Santo wood contains a variety of volatile compounds, including limonene, α-terpineol, and carvone. Limonene is a prominent component, making up a significant percentage of the essential oil. These compounds are known for their aromatic properties and are responsible for the wood’s distinctive sweet, woody, and citrusy scent.

Anti-inflammatory and Antimicrobial Properties

Studies have shown that the essential oil of Palo Santo has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. The presence of compounds like limonene contributes to these effects. This helps explain why Palo Santo has been traditionally used in folk medicine to treat various ailments, such as inflammation, pain, and infections.

Mood Enhancement

The aroma of Palo Santo is believed to have mood-enhancing properties. Limonene, one of the primary compounds in Palo Santo, is known to have anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects. Aromatherapy practices suggest that inhaling the scent of Palo Santo can help reduce stress, improve mood, and promote relaxation, which aligns with its traditional use for calming and spiritual uplifting.

Insect Repellent

Scientific research has also confirmed that Palo Santo is effective as a natural insect repellent. The smoke from burning Palo Santo releases compounds that are unpleasant to mosquitoes and other insects, making it a practical and natural alternative to chemical repellents.

Energetic Cleansing

While the concept of “energetic cleansing” is more spiritual than scientific, some researchers have explored the psychological and emotional benefits of rituals like smudging. The act of burning sacred wood like Palo Santo and focusing on intention can have a placebo effect, providing psychological comfort, reducing stress, and promoting a sense of well-being.
